Tee Box 1: The Bay

Tee Box 1: The Bay. 158 yards.

This is what you came for.  You are standing on hallowed ground. It’s the tee box for the first hole of the the original Milwaukee Country Club golf course in 1895. This is BAY. If you are a true golf aficionado, it’s ok to wipe that tear away. You may never stroll through Shorewood again without mentioning to your walking partner... “Did you know that THIS SPOT is the EXACT spot of the first tee...”

So grab your score card and let’s get started!

Yes. That is an original score card from 1900.

Along the tour today we'll be meeting some interesting players while imagining life, golf and Shorewood in the late 1800's early 1900's.  This was not just a back yard Putt-Putt.  As noted Spalding's 1903 Official Golf Guide -The 1903 Western Open was held here.

Alex Smith teed off at this VERY location and took home the top prize that year. The Western Open was a "Major" tournament before there were Majors and is now a very big deal! Today, the BMW sponsored event is part to the PGA Championship.

Alex Smith is a member of the PGA of America Hall of Fame and the Metropolitan PGA Hall of Fame.
And let's give a polite golf applause to the Runners Up that year - Laurie Auchterlonie and David Brown.

The Chicago Tribune, July 15, 1903 predicted that another golf legend in play at the event, Willie Anderson (World Golf Hall of Fame) would take home the big prize. Hope you didn't have any money riding on that one...

That's right. This course was a big deal. Let it all soak in. Take your time. See you on the green.
